Taking care of skin should be a daily routine since it is the largest organ of our body and it protects our body and internal organs. Any breach in health of skin can affect whole body. Hence ayurvedic remedies for glowing skin should include daily care (dinacharya) , seasonal care (rutucharya), healthy diet (hita ahara) and lifestyle. Ayurveda emphasises on these routines.

Ayurvedic skin care routine depends on deha prakruti or constitution of your body. The tridoshas (vata, pitta and Kapha) determine our body constitution. One tailor made regime may not fit all. Vata skin type:

vata skin care for glowing skinVata skin in balanced condition looks soft, delicate and radiant. The pores on skin are very smaller. When vata is imbalanced skin looks thin and almost transparent. This leads to dark circles below eyes and black discolouration due to appearance of blood capillaries below skin. Dryness of skin is prominent and it can also become flaky. Skin on forehead and ears are sites of vata and the skin on these parts help to determine the dosha imbalance. Vata skin type people are more susceptible to psoriasis, dry eczema, cracked feet and chapped lips.

Pitta skin type

pitta skin careSkin is the seat of pitta. When pitta dosha is in balanced condition skin is healthy, glowing and appears dark pink in colour. When exposed to sunlight, it appears blood shot. When pitta is imbalanced acne,  pimples and rashes may appear. Skin may become inflamed and irritated. Pitta skin type may be determined by observing skin on nose, back of neck and scalp.

Kapha skin type

Kapha skin is smooth, oily and mostly free from wrinkles and dryness. Imbalance of Kapha leads to excess oil on skin and cystic acne, which can leave scars. Skin may become oedematous .

Ayurvedic Remedies for glowing skin

Once the skin type is determined, ayurvedic remedies can be chosen to maintain skin health and increase its glow. These remedies include herbs, kitchen ingredients , diet and lifestyle to balance respective doshas.

Vata skin care

Since vata skin tends to be dry and cold, warm and moisture treatments help. If you don’t have acne or pimple, applying kumkumadi taila on face, at night helps. Body skin can be taken care of by massaging warm sesame oil or ksheerabala oil thrice in a weak. Pure cows ghee can be applied on chapped lips. Use warm and moist foods cooked with ghee. Never use cold, refrigerated, dry and stale foods

Vata skin cleanser:

To cleanse vata skin mix 1 tea spoon of almond paste with ½ tea spoon of cream or coconut milk. Apply this on face and gently massage without hurting underlying skin. Wash this off after 5 minutes.

Vata skin face pack

Mix 1/2 cup of milk, 1/8  cup water, 2 tea spoon shatavari root powder, hibiscus flower paste and vidari kanda root powder. Boil these for two minutes and allow it to cool. Add ¼ cup of yogurt or curd and mix well . Apply this on face and neck. Wash it off in warm water after 20 minutes. Repeat this twice in a week

Pitta skin care

Cooling herbs and oils are best choices for pitta skin care. Herbs like Neem, turmeric, manjishta, cucumber, ghee, coconut, khus, rose and sandalwood etc are all herbs for pitta skin. Consume cooling diet. It is better to avoid acidic and spicy foods.

Pitta skin cleanser

Mix 1 tea spoon of besan flour (lentil flour) or masoor flour (red lentil flour), ½ tea spoon neem leaves powder or triphala powder and 2 tea spoon rose water. Apply this on face and neck. Do not rub as pitta skin may inflame. Wash it off with cold water after 20 minutes.

Pitta face pack

Mix two tea spoons of 1 tea spoon of besan flour (lentil flour) or masoor flour (red lentil flour), 1 tea spoon of sandal wood powder and 1 table spoon of grated cucumber. Mix this well and apply on face and neck. Wash it off after 20 minutes with cold water.

Kapha skin care

Kapha skin is usually oily and may lead to acne and pimple break out. Hence toners and cleansers have to be used regularly. The best toner is amla water. Grate fresh amla fruit and squeeze its juice. Mix 1 tea spoon of amla juice with 6 tea spoons of water. Apply this on face and neck when you have kapha type skin. Aloe vera, tulsi leaf, lotus petals, rose petals, etc are good herbs for Kapha type skin.

Kapha skin cleanser:

Take 1 tea spoon of honey, and ½ tea spoon lemon juice. Mix them together. Apply this on face and massage gently. Wash it off after 5 minutes with warm water.

Kapha face pack

Take ½ tea spoon of honey, 1 tea spoon lentil flour and ½ tea spoon lemon juice. Mix them together. If needed add little water. Apply this on face and neck, wash it off with warm water after 20 minutes.

Here is a simple three step ayurvedic daily routine for glowing skin.

  1. Take a warm water shower. Don’t stand under shower for a long time as this removes the natural oil from skin.
  2. When your body is still wet, pour 10 ml of pure coconut oil (Read Health Benefits of coconut ayurveda view ) on your palm. Gently massage the whole wet body with this oil.
  3. Stand under shower just for a minute and allow it to dry on its own.

Just feel your skin. You can appreciate its soft and glowing texture. Coconut oil also helps to keep the skin moist for a very long time. The natural ingredients of this oil simply blend with the natural human skin.
