Bhringaraj – Eclipta Alba – Maaka for Hair Growth and Health

Ayurveda Praises this herb as “Bhringaraj” (a plant which makes hair as dark as beetle), “Maarkava” (a plant which keeps graying of hair at bay) and “Kesharaja” (protects health of hair as king protects his subjects).

Bhringaraj (Eclipta Alba) also known as “maaka” belongs to compositae family. It is small shrub which grows up to 1 foot. It bears white coloured flowers. It grows all over India in places where there is plenty of water supply.

Uses and Benefits of Bhringraj or Eclipta Alba:

Texts of ayurveda eulogise the medicinal properties of bhringraj as follows.

According to principles of Ayurveda this plant is light to digest (laghu) and may dry the tissues of body (rooksha). It tastes hot (katu rasa) and bitter (tikta rasa).  It has hot potency (ushna Veerya) . It mitigates vata and kapha..

Hair Health:

Ayurveda acharyas say that Bhringaraj helps in hair growth. It darkens the color of hair, prevents hair loss and slows down premature graying. Hence texts of Ayurveda Recommend Bhringaraj for Hair loss and scalp acne.

Scalp Acne:

This herb is known for its wound healing properties. Hence it can be used in scalp acne or scalp wounds. External application of paste of this plant as hair pack , helps to heal wounds. It cleans the wound and initiates the growth of granulation tissue. It also reduces pain and inflammation caused due to wounds. It prevents the formation of scar and boosts scalp health.


The nutrients in bhringaraja boost eye health. It helps to improve vision. Ayurveda acharyas recommend use of this plant in vision disturbances. Also applying oil processed with eclipta alba on scalp relieves tiredness of eyes.

Digestive System:

Indigestion can lead to under nourishment. This reduces availability of nutrients for hair growth. This herb increases appetite and improves digestion. It acts as liver stimulant. Bhringaraj is recommended in jaundice, intestinal parasites and indigestion. This helps in proper absorption of nutrients and makes the hair healthy.

Circulatory System:

Anemia can cause hair loss. Regular use of this herb improves anaemia and helps to normalise blood pressure and reduce hair loss.

Respiratory System:

Intake of Juice extract or Swarasa (juice extracted through swarasa kalpana) of eclipta helps in Cystitis and burning micturition.

Reproductive System:

Seeds of this plant are praised as “Vrishya” or aphrodisiac. These help to increase libido and are used in Vajikarana Therapy as Vajikarana Herb
